AD&D Benefits Can Help Financially In the Event of an Accident

AD&D insurance payments can be used as needed, including to cover any unexpected costs associated with an accident.

  • Accidental Death Benefit: If a covered accident results in death, an insured person’s beneficiaries receive the full coverage amount up to $750,000. This benefit is paid in addition to any other insurance benefits the insured may have.
  • Dismemberment and Injury Benefit: The insured can receive a percentage of the benefit coverage in the event of a covered severe injury, such as the loss of a limb, eyesight, speech, or hearing due to an accident.
  • Family Assistance Benefits: AD&D insurance includes additional benefits that may help cover tuition expenses for your spouse or children. These benefits may be payable if you or your spouse dies as a result of a covered accidental injury and a benefit for loss of life is paid under the policy, subject to eligibility requirements and policy provisions.

The following additional benefits are included as part of a licensee’s AD&D coverage:

  • Seat Belt Benefit: If the insured was wearing a seatbelt in a car accident and dies within 365 days because of the accident, they can receive up to 5% of the Principal Sum up to $15,000.
  • Air Bag Benefit: If the Seat Belt Benefit applies, MetLife will pay an additional benefit if the insured person was positioned in a seat protected by a properly functioning, original, factory-installed airbag system that inflates on impact when the accident occurred. The benefit amount is 10% of the Principal Sum up to $25,000.
  • Surviving Spouse Benefit: If Licensee or Spouse dies as a result of an accidental injury, then an additional amount is payable equal to 1% of the Principal Sum for each of the 12 months immediately following the date of such person’s death, providing that one spouse survives the other by at least 48 hours.

How much coverage does a person need?

The amount of AD&D coverage needed depends on various factors such as an insured’s financial obligations and goals. A person should also consider factors like outstanding student loans, family support, mortgage or rent payments, and educational needs for a spouse or children. Generally, more financial responsibilities would require more coverage. This benefit provides the opportunity for guaranteed coverage at an economical rate.

What’s the difference between Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance and Life Insurance?

While life insurance pays beneficiaries upon death, our Group Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance Plan provides financial protection from accidental injuries and fatalities. AD&D can be an effective supplement to life insurance by filling in gaps that life insurance doesn’t cover.

AD&D insurance financially protects against life-altering accidents that result in severe injuries or impairments like loss of a limb, sight, speech, or hearing. It can compensate for medical costs, rehabilitation, and other everyday expenses if an accident affects an insured’s ability to work.

AD&D insurance is also guaranteed issue, meaning it doesn’t require underwriting or medical exams.

What does "Guaranteed Issue" mean?

“Guaranteed issue” means applicants are automatically approved for this plan without any health questions or medical exams. Coverage will be effective on the first of the month following receipt of a completed Enrollment Form and the first premium payment.

Can family members be added to an AD&D policy?

Yes, coverage can be extended to a spouse or domestic partner and dependent children. Spouse coverage with no listed eligible children is up to 50% of benefit amount. For policies covering both a spouse and child(ren) these percentages are reduced to 40% for the spouse and 10% for each child. If there is no spouse listed, each dependent child is eligible for 15% of the benefit amount.

How does coverage work for my domestic partner and children?

Coverage for your domestic partner or dependent children varies based on who is enrolled in your policy. For example, if you obtain coverage for $500,000, the coverage amounts would be as follows:

Scenario Insured Party Benefit Amount
1. Licensee + Domestic Partner Licensee $500,000
Domestic Partner (50%) $250,000
2. Licensee + Domestic Partner + Dependent Child Licensee $500,000
Domestic Partner (40%) $200,000
Dependent Child (10%) $50,000
3. Licensee + Dependent Child Licensee $500,000
Dependent Child (15%) $75,000

How does the claims process work for AD&D insurance?

The claims process typically requires proof of a covered accident and any medical documentation related to the injury or fatality. Once documentation is submitted, benefits are usually paid directly to the insured, in the event of an accident, or the beneficiary, in the event of a death. Payments can be used for any purpose as needed.

Are there any age-based reductions to benefits?

Yes, the amount of coverage reduces to 50% at age 65, and to the lesser of 25% or $50,000 at age 70. These reductions and restrictions are standard in most AD&D policies, ensuring coverage remains accessible throughout a person’s working years while balancing age-related risk.
