FAQs

Answers about the program, including eligibility, options, customer service and more.

  • By whom is this plan underwritten?

This plan is underwritten by New York Life Insurance Company, 51 Madison Ave., New York, NY 10010, under Group Policy No. G-30922-0 on Policy Forms GMR-FACE/G-30922-0.

New York Life Insurance Company is licensed/authorized to transact business in all of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Canada. However, not all group plans it underwrites are available in all jurisdictions. Please check the website, brochure or contact the plan administrator for current availability. New York Life's state of domicile is New York, and NAIC ID # is 66915.

  • How much insurance should I consider?

Some insurance experts suggest that you purchase life insurance equal to five to nine times your current income. In addition, you should consider how much your dependents will need to maintain their lifestyle.

  • Who is eligible for this insurance?

Available exclusively to licensed attorneys with The State Bar under age 70, who may request coverage for themselves and their lawful spouses and domestic partners under age 70. In order to become insured, satisfactory evidence of insurability must be provided and the required premium must be paid.

A spouse or domestic partner who is also a licensed attorney with The State Bar is eligible for either licensed attorney or spouse coverage, but not both. If both licensed attorney and spouse are covered as members, neither may insure the other as spouse.

  • How does the Accelerated Death Benefit work?

The Accelerated Death Benefit option is available to help terminally ill insureds during a difficult and often financially challenging time. Under this provision you may request a one time advance payment equal to 60 percent (or $250,000, whichever is less) of your or your insured spouse’s or domestic partner current life insurance coverage.

This money can be used to help cover high prescription drug costs … medical bills … outstanding debts … to help pay for experimental treatments … the cost of modifications to your home … or for a family vacation—the choice is yours.

To qualify, a terminally ill insured must provide New York Life with proof of terminal illness (required: twelve months or less) as well as any other necessary medical information requested. For additional details and limitations, please see the Certificate of Insurance.

  • How much insurance can I request?

    Licensed Attorneys – $100,000 to $3,000,000 in $25,000 increments.

    Spouse/Domestic partner – $100,000 to $3,000,000 in $25,000 increments.

  • When does the coverage end?

A licensed attorney’s insurance will end the earliest of: the date this policy ends at the option of New York Life or the policyholder; the date insurance ends for the licensed attorney’s class; the end of the period for which the last premium has been paid for such licensed attorney; the licensed attorney’s premium due date coinciding with or next following the date the licensed attorney attains age 80; or the licensed attorney’s premium due date coinciding with or next following the date the licensed attorney ceases to be a licensed attorney.

Dependent coverage will end the earliest of the date the licensed attorney’s insurance ends under the group policy; the date the group policy is changed to end dependents’ life insurance; the date the person ceases to be dependent; or the end of the period for which the last premium has been paid for the dependent.

  • Will I meet with a salesperson?

Issuance of this policy is handled over the Internet and the mail. You can review the materials in the privacy of your home and purchase your insurance directly through the mail without meeting with a salesperson. You can, of course, talk to a licensed representative if you’d like. Please call the Program Administrator at 1-800-343-0132.

  • When is the coverage effective?

Each licensed attorney must give evidence of insurability satisfactory to New York Life. Subject to the requirements below, the licensed attorney will be insured on the first day of the month coinciding with or next following the date New York Life approves the request.

    Ability Requirement

A licensed attorney/spouse must be able to perform the normal activities of a person in good health of like age on the date the insurance is to take effect. If not, such insurance will take effect on the day the licensed attorney/spouse resumes such activities.

    Out-of-Hospital Requirement

A licensed attorney/spouse might be hospitalized on the date the insurance takes effect. If so, insurance will take effect on the day after discharge.

  • Are there any discounts available?

Pay Less if You Are a Qualified Nonsmoker (not using any tobacco or nicotine product): Nonsmokers meeting the highest underwriting standards may qualify for the "Preferred Plus" (the Plan’s best) rates. Other nonsmokers may qualify for "Preferred" or "Standard" rates.

  • Are there any exclusions?

    No Exclusions

After coverage is in force for two years, benefits are payable for death from any cause, anywhere in the world. If a covered person commits suicide within two years from the date the insurance takes effect, New York Life's liability will be limited to the premiums paid, plus interest.

  • What if I have second thoughts after I apply?

When you become insured, you will be sent a Certificate of Insurance summarizing your benefits under the Plan. If you are not completely satisfied with the terms of your Certificate of Insurance, you may return it, without claim, within 30 days. Your coverage will be invalidated, and you will be sent a full refund—no questions asked!
