Advantages of Group Term Life Insurance Offered to California Attorneys Administered by AMBA
Group life insurance comes with specific advantages, combining convenience with protection designed for your career and lifestyle.
Life Insurance Tailored to California Attorneys
California attorneys often juggle multiple financial responsibilities, such as running a practice, repaying student loans, or supporting a family. Life insurance helps ensure those responsibilities can still be met even if something happens to you.
These policies can go with you if you change firms, start your own practice, or retire.
An Easier Way to
Receive Coverage
Applying for life insurance should be simple and straightforward. You can apply online in New York Life’s secure online portal. The application can be completed in less than 30 minutes.
Faster Answers with QuickDecisionSM
QuickDecisionsm is New York Life’s proprietary medical underwriting process designed to help deliver a faster decision on your insurance application so you can be covered sooner — with typically no medical exam for many applicants.
Up to $3 Million in Coverage
California attorneys can select life insurance coverage in flexible $25,000 increments, with options ranging from $100,000 to $3 million. This flexibility allows you to tailor your coverage to meet your current financial responsibilities, whether you’re managing a growing practice, supporting a family, or preparing for retirement.
Get a 30-Day Free Look
You’ll have 30 days from receipt of your Certificate of Insurance to review coverage. If it doesn’t meet your expectations, return it without claim for a full refund, no questions asked. Your coverage will then be invalidated.
How Much Life Insurance Do California Attorneys Need?
The right amount of life insurance depends on your financial responsibilities, the needs of those who rely on you, and the expenses you want to protect. Attorneys often have unique financial obligations, such as practice-related debt, student loans, mortgages, or dependents relying on their income.
Ask these questions when choosing your coverage amount:
- What would your family need to maintain their current lifestyle if you were no longer there?
- Do you have a mortgage or other significant long-term debts?
- Would your practice, partners, or estate incur expenses that someone else would need to handle?
All three life insurance coverages allow you to select coverage that aligns with your specific needs today, and provides flexibility to adjust as circumstances change.

Already Have Life Insurance Through Your Work? You Can Still Apply
The right amount of life insurance depends on your financial responsibilities, the needs of those who rely on you, and the expenses you want to help protect. Group life insurance sponsored by the State Bar of California can be used to supplement the coverage you may already have through your employer. Workplace policies often have lower benefit amounts and usually end when your employment does. These group policies are portable, offer higher coverage limits, and give you more control over how long the coverage lasts.
This additional coverage can help close any gaps in protection, especially if you have financial responsibilities like a mortgage, dependent children, or retirement planning needs. Even if you get coverage through your employer, you can insure your spouse or domestic partner through this State Bar-sponsored Group life insurance if they are not covered.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a medical exam to apply?
Not always. Many applicants qualify for QuickDecisionSM underwriting, which uses health questions and data sources.
*QuickDecisionsm uses answers to online health questions and securely accessed data which may include prescription, motor vehicle, and medical claims data. An approval decision is conditional upon your group status, coverage limits, and other factors. A referral decision may be given and may require a medical exam. Some applicants may be declined coverage. QuickDecision is not available for all products or in all states and territories.
Can my spouse, domestic partner, or dependents be covered?
Yes. All three coverages offer optional coverage for a lawful spouse or domestic partner and dependent children. Eligibility and available amounts vary by coverage and age.
What happens to my coverage if I leave California or retire?
Coverage is portable. As long as premium payments continue and eligibility criteria are met, you can maintain your group life insurance policy until termination age regardless of changes to your practice status or residence.
How do premiums work?
Premiums for Group Term Life increase over time based on age brackets. The Group Level Term coverages offer locked-in premiums for the initial 10 or 20 years, depending on the option you select. After the term ends, coverage may be renewed with updated underwriting and rates.
How much coverage should I consider?
That depends on your income, debts, and family obligations. While individual needs vary, many attorneys use life insurance to cover mortgages, dependents’ education, and any current living expenses.
What’s the difference between these and employer-provided coverage?
Employer-provided policies are often limited in coverage and may not follow you if you change jobs. Choosing these coverages provide higher maximums while still receiving group rates.
I already have life insurance. Should I switch coverages?
Not necessarily. Review your existing coverage and compare it to your current financial responsibilities. If you discover a gap, adding an additional group policy could be a smarter solution than replacing your existing coverage.
When does my insurance become active?
Insurance may take effect on the first of the month after your application is approved by New York Life Insurance Company provided the initial contribution is paid within 31 days after the date you are billed (send no money now) and any person to be insured is actively performing the normal activities of a person in good health of like age on the date. Any person to be insured must also not be hospitalized on the date your insurance is to take effect. If so, insurance will take effect on the day after you are discharged.
Should I consider additional Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) coverage?
You may want to consider an AD&D policy to supplement (not replace) your life insurance coverage. AD&D insurance pays a benefit in the event of accidental death or serious injury. It’s a way to potentially increase protection for unexpected events.
